General and acute medicine is the immediate, specialist management of patients who are suffering from a wide range of medical conditions and who need urgent or emergency care.
If you require urgent or emergency care you will usually receive initial diagnostic tests and treatment in the medical assessment units, or the Emergency Department if necessary. Following initial care you may be discharged, asked to return for an outpatient appointment or other further treatment, referred to another specialist service, or admitted to a medical ward.
