Research
Dr Challen has broad research interests especially around pragmatic research and knowledge translation in the emergency context.
She has been PI for a number of trials including: CERA, TIRED, TELA, HAVEN, PREM-ED 65+, EXCOVIR, PRIEST, CRYOSTAT-2, DIMPLES, CRASH-4, Bronchstart and Paramedic-3.

Dr Challen is the inaugural Chair of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine Women and Gender Equity special interest group. She also chairs the RCEM Informatics Committee and is a member of the RCEM Public Health special interest group.
She sits on the Emergency Care Data Set technical group of NHS Digital and the Research Steering Committee of PERUKI (Paediatric Emergency Research).
She is research lead for the Emergency Department and co-lead for Division 6 (acute) at LTH. She is also co-Specialty Research Lead for Trauma and Emergencies for the North West Coast CRN.
She is a decision editor for the Emergency Medicine Journal, Infographics Editor for Academic Emergency Medicine and contributing faculty to TheSGEM.com and EDeducate.co.uk
Biography
Dr Challen grew up and trained in the North West. Her PhD from the University of Sheffield was on the identification of the high-risk patient at the front door of the Emergency Department.
She is passionate about access to high-quality evidence-based care for ell emergency patients, but equally keen to integrate public health and health promotion into care to the extent that emergency physicians are out of a job.
She is a firm believer in Free Open Access Medical Education (FOAMEd) and in the power of social media in medical education.
