For one of our dedicated volunteers, Roger Jackson, giving back to the hospital is deeply personal.
Roger has been volunteering with us for four years in the Rosemere Coffee Shop, within the Cancer Centre at Royal Preston Hospital, spending time meeting people, chatting with patients and offering a friendly face to those attending appointments.
“I enjoy meeting people and talking with patients,” he says. “That’s one of the best parts of it.”
His decision to volunteer was inspired by his own family’s experience of care. Eighteen years ago, his wife received treatment at the hospital before sadly passing away.
“I always felt I wanted to do something to give something back,” he says. “Then when I retired and had more spare time, I thought - now’s the time.”
Since joining the volunteer team, he has become a familiar and welcoming face to many patients, especially those who visit regularly for treatment.
“Some people travel a long way to get here, and some are picked up very early in the morning for appointments,” he says. “Just being there to chat or offer some comfort can make a real difference.”
During Volunteers’ Week, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers. Your time, kindness and commitment make a real difference every single day, helping make our hospitals welcoming, compassionate places for everyone who walks through our doors.
