Penwortham men cycle the Lake District to raise nearly £2000 for local neonatal charity

Local man David Rose and friends have raised over £1,900 in support of maternity and neonatal charity Baby Beat by tackling one of the UK’s most difficult cycling challenges.

The Fred Whitton Challenge consists of a 113-mile sportive around the Lake District, starting at Grasmere and taking in the climbs of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Harknott, Wrynose and Blea Tarn passes.

David, from Penwortham, took on the challenge on 12th September 2020 in memory of Harper Barden, the daughter of David’s friends Mark and Amy Barden who sadly passed away.

David said:

“It’s well-known that I love a challenge, and this one did not disappoint! While it was tough going, it was all worth it in the end as we have nearly raised a whopping £2,000! I want to say a huge thank you to Adam, Ben, Dom, Danny and Farrell for joining me on what was one of my biggest challenges yet and helping to raise a fantastic amount for Baby Beat. Now to plan my next challenge!”

Cathy Skidmore, Temporary Manager at Baby Beat, said:

“We knew David and his friends would do an amazing job, and what a selfless team they are! The funds raised will go a really long way to helping Baby Beat fund cutting edge equipment and the best services and comforts for mums and babies at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. On behalf of the Baby Beat team I’d like to say a huge thank you to David, his friends and everyone who donated.”
