The Ophthalmology service successfully applied for 17.5 million from Department of Health to fund our new and modern Lancashire Eye Centre which will open its doors at Chorley and South Ribble Hospital in December 2021 and cater to a population of 1.5million.

The new unit will be in addition to current facilities at Royal Preston Hospital and we are working with Interserve Group Limited to deliver the scheme.
Shveta Bansal, Consultant in Ophthalmology and Clinical Director for the programme said: “I’m very excited and thrilled to see this new facility. This is something we’ve been hoping for, praying for, and working towards for the last four years, if not more, so this is a fantastic story for us.
“It will massively improve the patient experience, which is what we wanted first and foremost. The sheer size of the unit, the flow, and the way it has been designed is very much centred on the patient having a good experience.. The highest volume of patients in a hospital is within an eye department so it is really important that we have the facilities and space that we need deliver the very best care for our patients.”

Our Ophthalmology Transformation Programme has also been shortlisted for the Clinical Governance & Risk Management in Patient Safety Award at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2021.
The team have done a virtual presentation to the judging panel and the winner will be confirmed at the awards ceremony on Monday 20th September.
Since 2016, with new leadership and a passionate team, wholescale transformation has occurred in ophthalmology, resulting in service redesign, increased recruitment, doubling of patient capacity and significant risk reduction.
