Local hospitals see Staff Survey results reach five year high

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals are delighted to announce that its latest staff survey results have achieved new five year highs despite the challenges presented during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Trust’s five-year improvement in a number of key areas is most notable in staff members recommending the Trust as both a place to work and receive care.

The Trust, which operates both Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital, has also seen improvements in staff satisfaction with the quality of care they’re able to deliver.

The results are gathered as part of the annual NHS Staff Survey, which focuses on staff experience in NHS organisations across the country.

Staff are asked to anonymously answer questions on 10 themes with the Trust seeing an improvement in six themes versus the previous year and six themes also sit above the national average.

Karen Partington, Chief Executive at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, said: “In what has been a tremendously difficult year for all our staff, I’m delighted that we have seen an improvement in six of the ten key themes of the survey.

“Staff members have worked tirelessly over the last 12 months to provide excellent care and compassion and I’d like to personally thank each and every one of them for their contributions.

“Our next steps are to host “Big Conversations”, where all colleagues are invited to come along to discuss the latest staff survey results, see how their feedback leads to changes and share any thoughts or ideas.”

The Trust acknowledges there are still several areas to improve upon, including staff experience which is a trend across the NHS generally at this time.

Work related stress continues to rise and motivation levels this year have been affected. However, the Trust has introduced a number of support mechanisms in response to the pandemic and are committed to supporting colleagues and teams both now and into the future.

Karen Swindley, Strategy, Workforce and Education Director at the Trust, added: “We are committed to improving the experience of our colleagues at work and the positive impact this has on patient care.

“This year our plans focus on the recovery and wellbeing of our colleagues after what has been a very challenging period. We will also place greater focus on improving our culture with a new equality, diversity and inclusion strategy, a new “on-boarding” experience so colleagues feel part of the team from day one, an early reconciliation approach to work place issues and implementation of a just culture to help staff work in a blame free, psychologically safe working environment where we hope to bring about change.

“We are always open to hearing what our colleagues have to say about how involved and supported they feel and will continue to involve them in these future plans.”
