Staff Survey 2023 Results

NHS Staff SurveyThe results of the annual NHS Staff Survey have now been announced, and despite challenging circumstances, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is pleased to be on or above average in all areas of the NHS People Promise, which are the themes in the survey we are measured against.

The Staff Survey is the largest of its kind and is carried out across thousands of NHS organisations across the country. The results are linked to the national NHS People Promise - a pledge that everyone in the NHS will help improve the experience of working in the organisation.

The themes of the promise are; we are compassionate and inclusive; we are recognised and rewarded; we each have a voice that counts; we are safe and healthy; we are always learning; we work flexibly and we are a team.

Our results show we are making good progress year-on-year and for 2023. We can see stability across colleague engagement and morale and out of the 97 questions asked, we are pleased to see we have made improvements in 83 questions. This is encouraging as we continue to work towards our Trust’s ambition to be a great place to work.

The results show improvements in compassionate leadership with colleagues indicating they are feeling encouraged by their manager. More colleagues feel they are given clear feedback on work and their managers take a positive interest in their health and wellbeing.

Questions around work-life balance have also seen improvements, particularly around flexible working, colleagues being able to speak to their manager about flexible working and colleagues reporting the organisation is supporting their work and home life. We have also seen an increase in colleagues recommending the organisation as a place to work

While it’s important to focus on the positive scores we should take pride in, it’s also right to recognise where more work needs to be done, including addressing wellbeing concerns, continuing to embed and work towards zero tolerance of violence and aggression across the organisation, continuing to support more positive team cultures, and increasing focus on recognition to support people to feel valued.

We recognise that times are tough for many of our colleagues and we want them to know that we are listening, so that we can take action and support them as best we can.

Following the results, Chief People Officer, Neil Pease, said: “I’m grateful to all our colleagues who took the time to fill the survey in, thank you for your continued commitment and dedication to your work, our patients, service users and our Trust.

“These results allow us to see where we are improving, and where we can do better to enable us to continue to make improvements that will help make our Trust a great place to work. I am delighted with the improvements in our staff survey over the last 12 months and my hope is that this time next year we see even greater progress.”
