- Renal Patient Engagement Group
Renal services are currently enjoying the benefits of more active patient engagement and participation in their decision making. As a specialist Renal centre, our trust serves the entire community of renal dialysis and transplant patients within the network of Lancashire and South Cumbria. This is a logistically large footprint, and patient input has been invaluable in helping us to manage and improve this service.
Renal services previously had meetings with regional patient representation but the Renal Patient Engagement (RPE) group was firmly established in July 2016, and since then regular meetings have been held with service users who represent all surrounding areas as well as dialysis and transplant patients. Representatives from The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) also attended one of the meetings, which proved beneficial in solving problems and alleviating concerns surrounding patient transport.
Renal patients and their carers are invited to attend the forums via the local Kidney Patients Association, and there is a regular cohort of 6-10 patients who do attend. It is hoped that these service users will continue to actively engage and that more will join when they see the benefits of doing so.
By engaging with patients and families this way, we are able to ensure that the future of our Renal service meets the needs of those who depend on it, as well as those who may come to need it in the future.

- FAQs (under development)
We are currently in the process of developing this section.
- When will I start dialysis?
This will depend on your symptoms – if you can pass decent amounts of urine and you are not regularly experiencing nausea and/or vomiting and breathlessness, it is common for people whose kidney function is 5-10% to still manage without dialysis. Blood results are also important, especially if the potassium level in your blood is high even after treatment for this, you might be advised to start dialysis as high potassium levels in the blood can be dangerous for the heart. If you are worried you can speak to one of the kidney choices nurses by calling our office – 01772 522902.
The kidney choices team is here to support people who have low kidney function and provide information about treatment options such as dialysis – there are different types and dialysis can be done at home or a dialysis unit. We can advise about symptoms of chronic kidney disease and help people live well even though they have low kidney function.
The kidney choices team are based at Royal Preston Hospital - contact number is 01772 522902 and email: Renal.Kidneychoicesteam@lthtr.nhs.uk
Please note that it is a Monday-Friday service and we do not work on weekends or Bank Holidays.
There is also a member of the kidney choices team who is based at Westmorland General Hospital for patients who live in the Morecambe Bay area – contact number is 01539 716618.
