Pain is a fascinating subject

The Royal College of Anaesthetists and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), have given this year’s annual research award to Professor Dr Shiva Tripathi, in the category of consultant.

The award recognises NHS Clinicians who are making outstanding contributions to clinical research, particularly in relation to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The professor’s appointment was confirmed at the virtual Anaesthesia Research awards earlier this week and was awarded to Shiva for his academic research and clinical work into lower back pain.

Speaking of his appointment, Professor Shiva Tripathi, who received the title of Honorary Clinical Professor within the Lancashire Applied Health Research Collaboration Hub (LARCH) at The University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN), in May 2021, said:  “The Trust has been very kind to me over the years and together we have gone on a journey together. I have incredible colleagues here at the Trust and the journey so far has been about pain but certainly not mine.

“Pain is such a fascinating subject and every case is different you know”, he says from his office at the Royal Preston Hospital.

“The only one constant is that you must keep the patient at the centre of everything you do. The patient always comes first.”

Doctor Tripathi is the Chief Investigator of an International multicentre First In Human study in Low Back Pain being conducted in the UK, Belgium, Spain, France and New Zealand.

In October 2021, The Lancashire Clinical Research Facility recruited the study’s first patient, following an unprecedented delay due to the on-going COVID 19 pandemic.
