Career history: Having completed medical training at Oxford University, I rotated around the south of England before developing an interest in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine (ICM) and returned to the north west to complete my training. I was appointed as a consultant to LTHTR in 2007 and developed the regional training program for regional ICM trainee doctors in my initial year. Following this I took on the lead for the Trust for University of Manchester medical students project options co-ordinating third year students develop short research and audit programs and chairing the oral examinations for this. In 2010 I co-edited a textbook “A Beginner’s Guide to Intensive Care Medicine” (Radcliffe Publishing). 2011 I took up the Associate Clinical Director for the Department of Anaesthesia which primarily involves developing the clinical activity of the Critical Care Unit. This is an expanding department that now sees over 1200 patients at Royal Preston Hospital and provides tertiary care for major trauma, neurosciences, maxillofacial surgery and complex gastrointestinal surgery. Research interests: Regional co-lead for research and implementing national research projects. Interest in Critical Care research.

Specialist interests: Sleep deprivation and delirium. We are currently contributing to several national trials including our first industrial trial looking at new medical therapies that improve outcomes following severe head injury.
