Career history:

Having completed medical training at Oxford University, I rotated around the south of England before developing an interest in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine (ICM) and returned to the north west to complete my training. I was appointed as a consultant to LTHTR in 2007 and developed the regional training program for ICM trainee doctors in my initial year. Following this I took on the lead for the Trust for University of Manchester medical students project options co-ordinating third year students develop short research and audit programs and chairing the oral examinations for this. I developed the research aspects of the unit and was the CLRN Lancashire and South Cumbria. speciality lead for critical care (2008-11). I have been clinical director of the critical care unit and, following this, the department of anaesthesia. The critical care unit is an expanding department that now sees over 1600 patients at Royal Preston Hospital and provides tertiary care for major trauma, neurosciences, maxillofacial surgery and complex gastrointestinal surgery.

I now spend most of my non-clinical time between research interests and furthering advances in intensive care medicine through the ICS (a UK patient and multidisciplinary organisation) and ANWICU.
