Renal Patient Engagement group
Renal services are currently enjoying the benefits of more active patient engagement and participation in their decision making. As a specialist Renal centre, our trust serves the entire community of renal dialysis and transplant patients within the network of Lancashire and South Cumbria. This is a logistically large footprint, and patient input has been invaluable in helping us to manage and improve this service.
Renal services previously had meetings with regional patient representation but the Renal Patient Engagement (RPE) group was firmly established in July 2016, and since then regular meetings have been held with service users who represent all surrounding areas as well as dialysis and transplant patients. Representatives from The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) also attended one of the meetings, which proved beneficial in solving problems and alleviating concerns surrounding patient transport.
Renal patients and their carers are invited to attend the forums via the local Kidney Patients Association, and there is a regular cohort of 6-10 patients who do attend. It is hoped that these service users will continue to actively engage and that more will join when they see the benefits of doing so.
By engaging with patients and families this way, we are able to ensure that the future of our Renal service meets the needs of those who depend on it, as well as those who may come to need it in the future.
