Learning and development

Our staff are our greatest asset, and we believe that enabling people to develop skills and expertise, in a supportive environment that encourages innovation and continuous improvement is vital to delivering excellent care with compassion.

Every member of staff has an annual appraisal that recognises achievements, and reviews our values-driven behavioural standards.  The appraisal helps you and your manager work together to define objectives for the coming year, identify development opportunities, and plan career progression.  The appraisal system identifies our rising stars so the right support can be tailored to your needs to help you reach your full potential.

Our award winning leadership development programmes have supported doctors, nurses and managers to become inspiring leaders and help our organisation move forwards and continuously improve.  Coaching and mentoring is available and we support staff to undertake accreditation and gain formal qualifications.  We also provide a wide range of training and development opportunities, from budget management to communication skills, as well as statutory and mandatory training for clinical skills and national policy implementation.  Training and development is delivered in a variety of ways, from classroom-based to virtual learning modules, so you can access what you need, when you need it.

Our three education centres provide a modern learning environment, and our library service supports staff to undertake research and develop their knowledge.  Our simulation suite is one of the most advanced in Europe and enables staff to develop their clinical skills and expertise using computerised mannequins in an environment that can mimic real-life medical situations.

Many of our staff also benefit from involvement in clinical trials and research, and our Centre for Health Research and Innovation can provide a wide range of support if you are interested in academic or clinical studies.

We provide education programmes for student doctors, nurses and allied health professionals and many of our staff find that involvement in teaching is rewarding and challenging.

The video below shows some of the innovative training we offer to our staff and students in our simulation centre.
