A member of staff at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been invited to present at a national conference on patient safety.
Kate Smyth, Non-Executive Director at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals and Lay Leader with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety Translational Research Centre will speak at a conference hosted by the Yorkshire Quality and Safety Research group and the Improvement Academy on “Improving Patient Safety: new horizons, new perspectives.”
Kate will be presenting with academics from the Yorkshire and Humber and Greater Manchester Patient Safety Translational Research Centres, the University of Leeds and the University of Manchester. The team will be delivering a workshop on the 16th October titled ‘Exploring and improving quality and safety for those whose voices are seldom heard.’ The workshop is aimed at both academics and practitioners and aims to open up discussions about patient safety and quality through the lens of those whose voices are seldom heard, and explore the ways in which we might seek out, and learn from their experiences.
Kate will lead a brief sample of training she delivers to healthcare assistants, that draws on her own experiences of being treated in hospital, and deals with supporting those with disabilities to be treated with dignity and to be treated safely during hospital stays.
Kate said: “I have been asked to speak about my personal experiences as a disabled patient in hospital and the training I give to healthcare assistants and apprentice healthcare assistants at Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust where I am a volunteer disability adviser with a mission to improve the way that disabled people are nursed in hospital.”
“I am delighted to have been invited to share my stories at this conference and hope that it will contribute towards improving care for disabled people.”
The Improving Patient Safety conference will take place at Cloth Hall Court in Leeds on 15th-16th October. The conference aims to share knowledge and create a new vision for patient safety research and practice.
