Award win for commitment to health and wellbeing

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has won a national award for its commitment to health and wellbeing.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, in collaboration with Wellbeing Partners (WBP) Occupational Health, have been awarded with the “Best Musculoskeletal Initiative” award at the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Awards 2019; organised by Personnel Today. The awards are a chance to celebrate teams and showcase successes in employee wellbeing.

The WBP occupational health physiotherapy department and health and wellbeing team at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals recently came together in a collaboration to target three main areas: improving health promotion, reducing sickness absence and improving the workplace in order to tackle recurring musculoskeletal problems (MSKs).

This work included promoting MSK related activities across the organisation; including fast track to physio, a focus on staff being fitter for work, back care workshops, weekly exercise classes and fitness checks. The team also developed a “MSK Task Force”; bringing in ergonomics and display screen equipment to improve the workplace environment.

The judges, including renowned Occupational Health Specialist – Dr Steve Boorman - reported the WBP entry was “a good example of adapting clinical practice to meet the needs of today’s NHS workforce.” Comments included that “being proactive rather than reactive and getting out onto the ‘coalface’ has increased the profile of occupational health and health and wellbeing, and actively demonstrating the support available to staff from occupational health.

Steve Shore, Lead Occupational Health Physiotherapist for WBP Occupational Health at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, said: “I am hopeful that this work will continue to enable us to identify what we are doing well, but to also positively challenge what we are doing and enable us to make continual improvements. The WBP Occupational Health team comprising doctors, nurses, counsellors and myself are committed to providing an excellent service to all staff at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.”
