Lancashire Teaching Hospitals

Expected Behaviour

The Trust expects all patients, relatives and visitors to behave in a manner that is appropriate for a hospital environment.  The welfare of vulnerable patients may be adversely affected by the inconsiderate behaviour of others.

We also have a responsibility to protect our staff from violence and abusive behaviour and this Trust will not tolerate any form of violence towards staff.

We would expect all patients and visitors to conform to any reasonable requests made by wards, departmental staff and managers.

The following are some examples of behaviour that are not acceptable on Trust premises:

  • Excessive noise
  • Threatening or abusive language
  • Racist or sexist remarks
  • Offensive gestures or behaviour
  • Alcohol or drug abuse
  • Drug dealing
  • Wilful damage to Trust property
  • Theft
  • Violence

The Trust has a policy and procedure for dealing with violence and aggression and adopts a ‘zero tolerance’ approach.  The Trust will consider a range of sanctions to resolve incidents of this nature, this may include criminal prosecution and, as a last resort, withdrawal of treatment.
