The physiotherapy service within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is committed to providing a high quality evidence based service to all our patients.
As a service we offer clinical placements for students from main higher education institutions. These placements are offered at both Chorley and South Ribble and Royal Preston hospitals.

Physiotherapy Service
The physiotherapy service offers a range of clinical interventions to a wide variety of specialities. These include respiratory, neurological and musculoskeletal interventions. All patients are involved in a goal orientated approach to treatment planning to provide the best possible outcome. We provide services to the following specialities.
General Surgery
Including patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal, colorectal and vascular surgery. Respiratory and rehabilitation interventions are provided to facilitate an earliest possible discharge.
General Medicine
Physiotherapy offers treatment to a wide variety of conditions including chronic lung conditions and acute mobility and neurological problems. Comprehensive assessment and planning is carried out to facilitated early discharge.
Burns and Plastic Surgery
Patients in both the inpatients and out patient settings are provided with rehabilitation for a variety of conditions. These include traumatic hand and limb injuries, including skin grafting, tendon repairs and major reconstructive surgery.
Head and Neck Surgery
Respiratory and rehabilitation interventions are provided to the major surgical patients. Patients are given pre and post operative support as required to assist recovery from the surgery. This is always provided by a multi professional team.
Orthopaedics
Trauma and elective surgery patients are provided with early intervention following a comprehensive assessment and treatment planning, to facilitate rehabilitation and early discharge. This provided over a seven day service within elective surgery.
Paediatrics
Children with respiratory, orthopaedic, surgical and neurological problems are provided with specialist assessments and treatments. Goal centred rehabilitation programmes and treatments are instigated both in the inpatients and outpatient settings, to facilitate the best outcome. On going care is provided for specific conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis and Talipes.
Neurosciences
Specialist rehabilitation assessment and treatment is provided across a wide range of clinical conditions. These are provided through both inpatients and outpatient environments. The treatment programmes are goal orientated and outcome measured. Services are provided to neurosurgical and neurology patients also to the regional neuro rehabilitation centre. Patients with long term condition such as motor neurone disease and Guillain Barriè are also provided with physiotherapy ongoing support through the specialist clinics.
Medical Rehabilitation Unit
Stroke, Cardiac and Falls rehabilitation is provided to a wide range of patients, treatments are patient specific and are goal orientated to enable the best possible outcome.
Musculoskeletal
A wide variety of clinical specialities are offered comprehensive physiotherapy assessment and treatments within the outpatient settings. This is either within the Consultant clinics or the physiotherapy department.
Specialist Mobility Rehabilitation Centre
Physiotherapy, in association with the multi professional team, provides rehabilitation for patients who have lost a limb, either traumatically or through planned surgery. Treatment includes a comprehensive assessment and a goal orientated programme of exercises and education in managing an artificial limb.
