Healthcare Scientists

There are over 51 disciplines that fall under the umbrella term of healthcare science. The Scientists are subdivided into three broad areas within the NHS. These are known as Life Sciences, Physiological Sciences and Clinical engineering & Physical Sciences.

Biomedical scientists for example carry out a wide range of laboratory tests to support doctors in diagnosing and treating disease in patients and monitoring progress during and after treatment. It is thought that approxiamately 70% of diagnoses are made by Biomedical Scientists.

Clinical scientists are specialists in a particular area of science or engineering, who apply their specialism to medicine. Clinical support workers carry out practical tasks in scientific and physiological measurement departments in hospitals. They form part of a team, supporting the work of biomedical scientists and clinical scientists.

Pharmacists make up prescriptions and advise patients on how to use the medication they prescribe. Physiological scientists investigate the functioning of organ/body systems (such as the heart or lungs), to diagnose abnormalities and find ways to restore function an/or reduce disabling consequences to the patient.
