Lancashire Teaching Hospitals

Allied Health Professions

These pages are published in order to inform and support those who are Allied Health Professional or Healthcare Scientist Students and will at some time be with us on Placement at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. We also hope to inform the general public who might wish to consider one of these roles as a future career.

There are well over 50 different roles within the professions allied to medicine and Healthcare Scientist roles. They are dealt with under the same umbrella term here in an effort to simplify the information.

Allied Health Professionals (AHP's) and Healthcare Scientists (HCS) can carry their own caseloads and may work as autonomous professionals, for example they may work directly with a patient to develop some interactive therapies to aid recovery. Health and social care today is about teamwork so AHP's and HSC will also be part of a team and may even lead one.

Not surprisingly, the academic requirements and training demands are high, but then so are the rewards, both in terms of job satisfaction and career prospects.

Acquiring the knowledge and skills to become a professional involves training and study at degree or diploma level but there is a also a range of vital support roles that require no set academic qualifications.

All Mentors/Clinical Supervisors of Students are encouraged to attend multiprofessional updates which are known as supporting learning in Practice. Book your place with any PEF.
