The NHS in Preston will launch a series of special diabetes clinics for Muslim patients fasting during Ramadan, which starts on 20 August 2009.
NHS Central Lancashire and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have teamed up to offer three sessions for Muslim diabetic patients to gain specialist advice about coping with their condition while fasting.
The clinics will be held between 9am and noon on Saturday 1, 8 and 15 August 2009 at the Minerva Health Centre at Preston North End Football Club.
The clinics have been planned by the multidisciplinary diabetes team, which works across Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and NHS Central Lancashire.
Dr Mohamed Suliman, Consultant in acute medicine, diabetes and endocrinology, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is leading the team running the clinics.
He said: “The clinics are specifically to provide advice to Muslim diabetic patients who plan to fast this Ramadan, which starts on 20 August 2009.
“Fasting can pose risks to diabetes patients and people will need to make suitable preparations to ensure that they can fast safely. The clinics will allow people to consult specialists so that we can assess and advise.
“The advice will be based on individual circumstances but some may be required to make changes to their medication or how it is administered.”
If you wish to attend one of the clinics phone the Minerva Health Centre on 01772 777600 or phone your own GP for more information.
